ISO 50001 energy management

Plant planners and manufacturers

ISO 50001is a globally applicable standard from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which is designed to support organisations and companies in establishing systematic energy management; it can also serve as evidence of an energy management system that complies with the standard through certification. It was published in June 2011 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In Germany, DIN EN 16001 was withdrawn on April 24, 2012 and replaced by the standard published as DIN EN ISO 50001 in December 2011.

The introduction of an energy management system is fundamentally voluntary; no statutory certification requirement exists. However, certification in Germany in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001 (or a registered environmental management system in accordance with the Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) regulation) is a prerequisite for the partial exemption from the Renewable Energies Act (EEG) surcharge of highly energy-intensive companies that come into in question and in future also for electricity and energy tax relief for companies in the manufacturing sector.

Systematic energy management is based on recording the energy flows in a company (energy sources, energy use, energy consumers) and evaluating the state of energy efficiency, in particular of plants/facilities and processes/activities that are key to overall energy consumption. This forms the basis for implementing technical measures to improve energy efficiency and strategic and organisational management approaches. Organisational and technical measures should lead to the systematic and long-term improvement of energy-related performance. Fundamentally, the introduction of an energy management system makes sense for all organisations regardless of their size and industry, provided that they use more than just small amounts of energy.
