In recent years, both energy prices and the legal requirements imposed on companies in the area of energy to achieve national and international climate goals have risen continuously. More and more companies are therefore focusing on the topic of energy management. On the one hand, the economical and efficient use of energy is essential to meet the legal requirements, but on the other hand, it also offers opportunities for companies to reduce their energy costs and benefit from other economic incentives. Energy management systems according to DIN EN ISO 50001 offer a comprehensive approach. More and more companies are therefore focusing on the topic of energy management.

DIN EN ISO 50001 defines guidelines for and requirements of an energy management system (EnMS) for organisations and companies. The goal of such a system is the continuous improvement of energy-related performance, which relates to energy use, energy consumption and energy efficiency. In this context, energy management encompasses all levels and areas of the company. Systematic energy management defines an energy policy, sets targets and establishes processes to achieve them. Based on a survey of the energy flows in the company, those energy inputs are identified that contribute significantly to energy consumption and/or or offer significant potential for improvement. After the introduction of the standard in 2011, an amended version was published in 2018, which serves as the basis for annual audits. With the amendment, the standard was adapted to the so-called “High Level Structure”, whereby the standards for quality (ISO 9001), environmental (ISO 14001) and energy management systems (EnMS) now follow the same structure and use the same vocabulary. This facilitates the merging of the systems into an integrated management system. Numerous central documents and processes that are already established in quality and/or environmental management can also be transferred or extended to the aspect of energy management with little additional effort. The certification body checks the implementation of the standard requirements for energy management and the development of energy-related performance in the course of regular audits. Increasing energy efficiency through an effective EnMS saves energy and thus costs, protects the environment and the climate through lower CO2 emissions and thus contributes to securing the future of the company. Certification according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018 is basically voluntary for companies, there is no certification obligation. However, a certified energy management system is a prerequisite for the relief of energy-intensive companies with regard to the EEG apportionment through the Special Compensation Scheme (BesAR) as well as for the reimbursement of electricity and energy taxes within the framework of the Peak Compensation Efficiency System Ordinance (SpaEfV). In addition, an energy management system exempts non-SMEs from the obligation to regularly conduct energy audits according to DIN EN 16247-1.
